You went out with friends, had fun and somewhat forgot one major beauty rule NEVER SLEEP WITH MAKEUP ON and you want to know if it’s okay to sleep with makeup even if it was for one night ? The truth is while it is okay to sleep fall asleep with your makeup on at least once – it could still cause major breakouts, bumps, dull skin and irritation etc. which can be so uncomfortable for you.

Joshua Zeichner, MD and Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City tells teenVOGUE when your skin is not fully cleansed the night prior – skin adjustment which includes an overnight renewal process and optimal hydration levels won’t be able to function properly with a heavy makeup layer sitting on your face.

In spite of this – it is sometimes unavoidable sleeping in your makeup especially when too exhausted, so here’s EXACTLY what you should do the morning after:

STEP 1: Cleanse Immediately

Cleanse your makeup as soon wakeup. It is advisable you give you’re a fresh start with a Double cleanse. Use a cleansing oil or makeup wipe to dissolve the remaining makeup on our face. Follow up with a gentle face wash – avoid using a face wash that contains grainy textured exfoliant if your skin is sensitive. Besides exfoliating does more harm than good to an already irritated skin.

Using the right cleanse for your skin is key to a fresher skin.

  • For Dry skin – use a hydrating cleanser
  • For Sensitive skin – Cream or micellar water cleanser works best
  • Oily/Acne prone skin – Use a salicylic acid cleanser

STEP 2: Use a Skin Balancing Toner

Using a balancing toner will help remove debris lodged between the pore and balancing your already out of whack skin.

STEP 3: Try a hydrating face mask

Nourish your skin with a hydrating face mask. What makes this good is that brightens your stressed and dull complexion. It reduces the risk of irritation when treating acne breakouts afterwards.

STEP 4: Treat breakouts

Spot treatments can dry out pimples – benzoyl peroxide tea tree oil or salicylic acid are typical examples. Dab little on the surface and surrounding area to treat breakout. Note: Benzoyl peroxide can cause irritation to extremely sensitive skin, try lowering the concentration or opt for a BP cleanser if you must use.

STEP 5: Moisturize! Moisturize!! Moisturize!!!

Moisturizing reduces the risk of skin problems – also the appearance of other blemishes. Apply a good moisturizing face cream to restore your skin’s moisture and glow.

STEP 6: Let Your Skin Rest

Avoid applying makeup for at least 12 hours – hydrates overnight. But if you must, use makeup with medicated formula.
