A glowing skin according to experts is a skin that is moist and soft, free from blemishes with even complexion. One of the major characteristics of a healthy skin is its natural glow. Having a glowing skin is a must for many women but it isn’t just a matter of having good genes. Genetics plays a role but not the only determinant of a good skin. Healthy habits when it comes to skin care routine and wellness are also predetermining factors.

Ensuring your skin receives full benefits of each skincare product you use, falls down to three (3) main steps:

  • Washing your face regularly (Cleansing)
  • Balancing your skin (Toning)
  • Hydrating and softening your skin ((Moisturizing)

Depending on various product reviews, consultations with doctors and dermatologist – caring for your skin is personal. Having a skin care routine, you stick to helps to boost the metabolism of skin so that is functioning at its best round the clock. A beauty skin care routine also helps remove blemishes from your skin or at least lessen them. It is important to note that as the demands of your skin shift with age, so will the beauty products you use. By doing these main steps (cleansing, toning and moisturizing) and making it a habit you fortify and nourish your skin. The end result is a radiant and glowing skin.

Cleansing

Choose non-comedogenic products, these products do not trigger acne or clog the pores of your skin.

Washing your face is the most basic and essential step of any skincare beauty routine. Cleansing helps remove dirt, environmental pollutants and other factors we come across in our day to day activities. Washing your face at least twice daily, morning and night is necessary to avoid clogged pores, dullness & acne.

Every human being has its own unique features, so also does facial cleansers. Selection of facial cleansers is based on your skin type. The right skin care product cleanses your skin without stripping essential oils from your skin. Choose non-comedogenic products, these products do not trigger acne or clog the pores of your skin. The term “non-comedogenic” can be easily found on beauty products. A comedogenic product or a product that does not state to be non-comedogenic may cause skin reactions. Common comedogenic ingredients include cocoa butter, coconut oil. It’s important you check before buying any skin care product.

Toning

Many toners of today add specific ingredients/nutrients that may not be present in other beauty products.

A toner refreshes your skin without stripping it of its natural moisture. Toners are generally regarded as supplements. A good toner does not cause excessive dryness or skin irritation. Toners help to nourish by delivering an extra shot of nutrients and adds a layer against impurities.

They help other products in your skin care beauty regimen absorb and penetrate better and deeper in your skin while still balancing your complexion. Many toners of today add specific ingredients/nutrients that may not be present in other beauty products.

Some specific nutrients added include:

Vitamin E and C – Both are antioxidants that protects our skin against daily exposure free radicals. Vitamin E and C are naturally occurring nutrients. Free radicals cause damage to your skin and greatly contributes to rapid ageing of your skin. Applying toners that contain these nutrient helps ward of free radicals by acting as shield.

Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids – gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells that could clog pores. They help give your skin the natural glow. AHA and BHA are known to increase skin sensitivity. So, proper care should be taken to protect your skin against sun exposure.

Hyaluronic Acid – helps boost hydration by locking in moisture. It prevents saggy skin and wrinkles. It even helps firm facial contours for a more youthful appearance.

Rose water – helps soothe redness of an irritated skin due to its ant-inflammatory effect. It also removes oil and dirt from your skin. It moisturizes and prevents acne, rashes, dermatitis and eczema.

Green Tea – Green tea has anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties making it suitable for treatment of acne and oily skin. It also helps your skin look younger and healthier.

Tip: When next you go to a beauty store, look for toners with these ingredients.

Toners are best applied after cleansing your face. Do not use cotton or soft pad instead apply with clean hands, it is the most efficient. Just pour a few drops then swipe it on.

Toners can be applied at any time of the day, once in the morning and once at night. If your applying with exfoliating acid, then it’s best applied at night.

Treating with Serums

Serums contain a higher amount of active ingredient that solve specific skin care concerns such as dark spots, wrinkles and fine lines. It is best applied after cleansing before moisturizing.

Serums also have antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from daily irritants. Serums are moisturizing but can’t take the place of a moisturizer. Just like toners, look for serums that contain specific ingredients to tackle your specific skin care needs.

Vitamin C : Vitamin C has a potent antioxidant property that help neutralize free radicals and damage caused by UV radiation. It helps brighten dull skin, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. With continued use, it decreases dark spots, repair damage skin cells. As a brightening agent, it brightens dull skin.

Retinol : Retinol promotes skin renewal and stimulates collagen production. Collagen plays a major role in strengthening the skin, promoting firmness, elasticity and hydration. Collagen is responsible for the youthfulness of your skin.

Vitamin B3 and Peptides: prevents water loss and retains the skin’s moisture content. Aside pigmentation, they also reduce signs of ageing – fine lines and skin sagging.

Colloidal Sulphur: Colloidal Sulphur has antibacterial properties that help treat acne. Its anti-inflammatory properties help soothe irritation and skin redness. It also helps remove dirt and clean skin pores.

When using serums

  • Do not mix it into your moisturizer, this reduces the potency.
  • Allow your skin to dry properly before application if you have a sensitive skin.
  • Avoid applying excess to prevent skin irritation, especially for a sensitive skin.
  • They can be layered under moisturizers for dry skin. Apply two (2) times daily in the morning.
  • Serums containing antioxidant like vitamin C are best applied in the morning. Retinol serums work best at night because they are unstable during the day. They degrade on your skin if applied.

Tip: Read the label of each cosmetic and skin care product before use.

If you’re treating multiple skin care problems, treat these different areas with different products. Apply on spots that need treating, like dark spots.

Moisturizing

Like every other skin care product, you need to pick a moisturizer that suits your skin type.

Moisturizers help prevent water loss from your skin. Moisturizers hydrate and soften your skin. Moisturizing is very beneficial to combat skin care problems such as flakes, eczema, redness and so on.

Like every other skin care product, you need to pick a moisturizer that suits your skin type.
