Step 2: Toner

Formulas for toners vary widely and can serve multiple purposes. It is important to note hat each type of toner is intended for a different skin issue – hence, the need to use the right type for your skin.

Step 3: Antioxidant Serums

Serums are designed to deliver high concentrations of specific active ingredients and nutrients to the skin. Serums address specific concerns making it valuable. Antioxidant serums i.e. serums containing Vitamin C are best applied in the morning under sunscreen – because antioxidant serums provide variety of benefits such as protecting your skin from UV rays and environmental pollutants by building your skin’s response to neutralizing damage.

Which ever serum brand you choose to use, apply it after cleansing but before moisturizing your skin.

Step 4: Moisturizing

Moisturizers are important for all skin types including oily skin (but use a gel-based, light weight or non-comedogenic moisturizers). Experts advice that moisturizers are best applied when the skin is damp – you would be able to lock in much needed hydration with your moisturizer after applying serum and various other treatments.

Pro Tip: Avoid applying your moisturizer on areas when using spot treatment to avoid interferences.

Step 5: Sunscreen

Darker skin tones require more sun protection due to hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen should be the last step in your daytime skincare routine. That said, if you have a darker skin tone selected sunscreen should offer broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and recommended by the Skin Cancers Foundation. Usually, sunscreen should have a least 30SPF. Selected sunscreen should fit your skin type and sensitivity.

Common DIY hacks to Avoid:

  1. Baking Soda: While it is generally not harmful, baking soda can irritate your skin. At a pH of 8 baking soda will decrease your skin’s water content causing dry skin.
  2. Lemon Juice: It is too acidic and causes dark spots to appear after exposure to sun. Lemon juice also irritates and causes dry skin.
  3. Sugar: Used as exfoliant, it can be too harsh for your facial skin.
  4. Toothpaste: Ingredients used in toothpaste can dry out or irritate your skin.
  5. Garlic: Garlic used in raw form can cause eczema, allergies, watery blisters and skin inflammation.
