Female orgasm or the big O has unfortunately till date been surrounded by harmful myths and remains misunderstood. Many women do not experience orgasm often as they should unlike their male counterparts due to three likely culprits: method, expectations and lack of communication.

So, what exactly is female orgasm

Female orgasm or generally orgasm as we know it is the peak of sexual excitement. It can be highly pleasurable and can occur during clitoral stimulation or any form of sexual activity.

Female orgasms feel like a combination of physical pleasure and sensation with a release of erotic tension.

Any type of orgasm can feel amazing with each climax feeling different in terms of intensity and depending on:

  • Duration
  • What part of the body is being aroused
  • How the body is being aroused

Why do female orgasm

The female orgasm still poses a mystery to health professionals. While male orgasm has a clear evolutionary purpose – as it may lead to pregnancy after sperm deposit in the vagina, the female orgasm has no clear purpose.

A study carried out in 2016 found the evolutionary explanation of female orgasm hard to come by.  However, for many women, orgasm besides providing a physical release, it is a requirement for happy, meaningful sex. When viewed psychologically orgasm is also an emotional one – as a stress reliever and a way to feel emotionally closer to your significant other.

Types of Orgasm

1. Clitoral Orgasm

Clitoral orgasm is caused by the stimulation of clitoris. This type of orgasm is often felt on the surface of the skin and in your brain – like a tingly feeling. For most women, the clitoris is the top choice when they want to experience pleasure.

Dr Ross to Health says: “The clitoris is a very sensitive part of a woman’s anatomy, composed of millions of nerve endings similar to that of the penis.” While clitoral stimulation is the surest and most accessible kind, it is varied among women. Every woman is different when it comes to clitoral stimulated orgasm. One woman may like it to be touched or caressed (direct stimulation) with fingers, tongue or palm while another may like being touched around the labia (indirect stimulation).

Pro tip: If you find it difficult experiencing orgasm, try experimenting with your partner or on your own – tell your partner what you like.

2. Vaginal Orgasm

Vaginal orgasm occurs via deep penetration of the vagina. A 2017 study found 1 in 5 women being able to orgasm through vaginal stimulation alone – without clitoral stimulation. This shows that for some woman this is the most difficult to achieve – easiest for penises.

The ability to orgasm vaginally is often attributed to the G-spot, A-spot or O–spot. Researchers believe when either spots one adequately stimulated it could cause intense pleasure in some women.

The G-spot is usually stimulated with a “come hither” or circular motion rather than an in-and-out movement with your fingers inside the vagina for G-spot orgasm.

The A-spot located on the anterior wall of vagina is deeper than the G-spot as with the O-spot. Experts believe using an insertable for or experimenting with your partners fingers or a penis long enough to feel the high end of the vagina can stimulate nerves necessary for deep vaginal erogenous orgasm.

3. Anal Orgasm

Yes! Anal orgasm is real and they are achieved through anal stimulation. Everyone can do it but for most people it is a no go – it’s important to talk to your partner about this if your thinking about experimenting.

Anal orgasm feels like an urge to pee but not around your genitals – instead around the genital sphincter. Anal penetration indirectly stimulates the vagina.

Dr Hall tells Health “Because the anus and rectum are so close to the vagina and the clitoris … by a thin stretch of tissue called the perineum – they share many of the same nerves and muscles, including the PC pelvic floor muscle. She adds that this muscle is highly sensitive for women and can trigger both vaginal and anal orgasm if properly stimulated.

Pro tip: The key to anal orgasm if you’re the receiving partner is being relaxed and aroused. It is also very important to use a lubricant – this type of sex comes with risk. The butt does not naturally produce lubricant. Not using can cause pain that could have been prevented and unwanted infection.

4. Blended Orgasm

Blended orgasm is a pleasurable combination of orgasm from different parts of your body – all happening at once. It usually occurs when clitoral and vaginal orgasm happens at the same time. But it could also come from vaginal penetration alongside clitoral, anal or nipple stimulation – or all of these erogenous zones at once. The result – an explosive intensifying pleasure.

5. Squirting Orgasm

Squirting orgasm aka Tsunami of love, jizzing, female ejaculation or whatever you call it is generally considered the hallmark or orgasm. Some women experience this type of orgasm every time they have sex while for others a one-time thing.

Described by Gigi Engle author of “All the F*ckng Mistakes: A Guide to Sex, Love and Life.” “Squirting refers to expulsion of fluid folks with vulvas during sex.”

The fluid released is typically clear and isn’t PEE but a combo of urea, uric acid and creatinine. The skene gland locates around the opening of the urethra as responsible for the fluid release. Most women experience squirting orgasm usually from G-spot stimulation or clitoral and a combination of both.

6. Nipple Orgasm

Your breast and nipples are in fact major erogenous zones. We know what you’re thinking -yes, it’s possible for a woman to orgasm without touching their genitals. The nipples are a perfect example for this scenario – because they contain tonnes of nerve endings and super sensitive skin playing with your nipples (touching or stroking) can bring you to orgasm.

Though it’s not clear how many women can orgasm via this method – many women describe the feeling as a powerful climax that comes in waves.

Nipple orgasm may feel more intense during various time of the month especially during menstruation when breast sensitivity is heightened.

7. Mental Orgasm

Mental orgasm does not require physical stimulation. It is achieved by thought alone. Not a myth but reality – mental orgasms as a chance for those who have physical disabilities and difference to procreate and enjoy also.

8. Exercise Orgasm/Coregasm

Coregasm is an exercise induced orgasm that happens when doing a core exercise or workout. It may sound a little bit strange but coregasm/exercise orgasm are absolutely real. Women are more likely to experience this type or orgasm than men.

A study surveying 530 women by the Indiana University found 370 of the totals had in one way or the other experienced orgasm or sexual pleasure during workout sessions. For some women, a coregasm feeling is similar to a deep vaginal orgasm, though not that intense.

9. Multiple Orgasm

Multiple orgasm is entirely different from blended orgasm. Unlike blended, it happens immediately – one after the other, with no refractory period in between. Many women experience this but not every woman will want to – it can take some time to know your body to achieve this orgasm.

10. Skin Orgasm

Skin orgasms also known as frissons are electrifying sensations felt on your epidermis. It occurs as shivers across the skin, trembling limbs, sweat and becoming flushed. Music is the most common trigger of frissons but it could be physical contact, watching a movie scene, beautiful artwork.

11. Cervical Orgasm

Cervical orgasm is achieved by stimulating the cervix and not by penetration when stimulated the genital sensory cortex in the brain is affected resulting in an intense orgasm. Cervical orgasm is triggered via deep penetration of the vagina.

In terms of safety cervical stimulation is safe under normal circumstances but you’d have to be okay with the idea of deep penetration before trying to achieve a cervical orgasm. It is not uncommon to experience pain during vaginal penetration.

12. Kissing Orgasm

Kissing orgasm is very much possible. Long and passionate kisses are one of the surest ways for women to reach orgasm. Lips, like nipples are one of the few erogenous zones on a woman.
