Coronavirus| The New Virus in Town

Coronavirus is a family of different types of virus that affects the respiratory tract of mammals, humans inclusive. Since the respiratory tract is affected, diseases such as common cold, middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory System (SARS) which are severe an lead to life threatening situations.

There are several types of Coronavirus found in animals that are not known to infect humans.

Symptoms

Respiratory symptoms/common cold symptoms such as

  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rhinorrhea

Severe symptoms include

Kidney failure, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome and even death (according to the WHO)

As of now, we know that

1. There is presently no cure for the common cold

2. SARS and MERS are both caused by the virus

3. Scientists as of date have identified at least 7 strains that affect humans

4. The virus has killed thousands with more body count pilling by the day.

Treatment

At this point there is no cure or vaccine available for treatment or prevention

1. Drinking water at least 7 liters

2. Being filly rested

3. Take pain killers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen etc. for pain and fever

4. Avoid smoking and smoke polluted areas

Transmission

It is believed that Coronavirus can be transmitted via the following ways

1. Making contact with contaminated surface

2. Coughing and Sneezing without protective measures spreading the droplets via air

3. Shaking and touching contaminated persons

4. Oral fecal transmission on a Rae occasions

Prevention

According to the WHO, it’s recommended that you

1. Regularly wash your hands

2. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or Sneezing

3. Washing and cooking meat/eggs/fish thoroughly

4. Avoid close contact with suspected infected persons

5. Use hand sanitizers after washing your hands
