The bag made its debut in 2014 from Brooklyn-based designer Telfar Clemens. In keeping with Telfar’s intention to put his own perspective on consumer norms, the design is based on the real measurements of your typical department store shopping bag and is made of vegan leather. However, it wasn’t until 2019 that the accessory became truly popular, first among queer and POC cool kids in neighborhoods like Bushwick before spreading far beyond.
“Not for you—for everyone,” is the brand’s motto. They are hard to come by these days. The bags are priced between $150 and $257, and when they are launched in almost weekly drops on Telfar’s website, they almost immediately sell out (though the label has worked hard to increase supply and occasionally offers guaranteed pre-order opportunities).
