Zendaya continues to write Emmy Awards history. In recognition of her portrayal of Rue Bennett in Euphoria’s second season, the actress won her second Emmy this year for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The superstar has become both the youngest two-time Emmy winner in history and the first Black woman to win the award twice in the same category. The 26-year-old gently expressed her gratitude to the Television Academy, her family, friends, and the Euphoria cast and crew for “making such a safe space to make this difficult ” in her tearful acceptance speech.
She also commended the show’s creator Sam Levinson specifically, adding, “Thank you for believing in me even in moments where I didn’t believe in myself.”
Finally, the Spider-Man actress dedicated her award to fans and viewers who have shared their own stories and related to the show’s content.
“My greatest wish for Euphoria was that it could help heal people, and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has shared their story with me,” she said. “I want you to know that anyone who has loved a Rue or feels like they are a Rue, I want you to know that I am so grateful for your stories, and I carry them with me, and I carry them with her.”
Zendaya wore a strapless black peplum Valentino gown with a sweetheart neckline and a bow tie belt earlier this evening as she walked the red carpet. She accessorized the dress with a diamond choker necklace from Bulgari and diamond stud earrings.
