The sequel to Netflix’s blockbuster action film The Old Guard is on the way, which will please fans. Gina Prince-thriller Bythewood’s (based on Greg Rucka’s comic book) launched in July and broke streaming records, signaling that there’s a great thirst for more. There are few information about the film at this point, but its star Charlize Theron has confirmed that it will be released. The following is what we know so far.

Victoria Mahoney is the new director for the sequel.

The Old Guard 2 is continuing forward with a new director after several months of delays. Victoria Mahoney has been hired to direct the sequel, according to Deadline, with Prince-Bythewood sticking on as a producer. Mahoney was previously the second unit director for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and she is the first female director of a Star Wars film, as well as the first Black woman.

“The aggregate levels of talent, skill, and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard blew me backwards,” Mahoney told the site. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement–being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences.”

All of the film’s stars, including Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, are set to reprise their roles, according to Deadline.

Filming will begin in 2022

The script is complete, and filming will begin in the first quarter of 2022, according to Theron, who plays the immortal warrior Andy. Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, who played a couple onscreen, have also confirmed their participation in the sequel.

The cast now includes Henry Golding and Uma Thurman

According to Deadline, Uma Thurman, who starred in Kill Bill, and Henry Golding, who starred in Crazy Rich Asians and Persuasion, have joined the sequel in unknown roles, and will join the returning cast. The news comes as filming gets underway in Europe, with Mahoney posting a photo from the first day of shooting on June 13. This week, Theron was seen filming in Rome with Layne and Ejiofor.

KiKi Layne has expressed interest in a sequel.

Layne, who plays Nile, a Marine with healing abilities, recently told BAZAAR that she would be interested in continuing the story of The Old Guard.

The prospect of a sequel, according to Prince-Bythewood, is contingent on the audience.

When asked if she had any ideas for another film, the Old Guard director told BAZAAR.com, she always maintained it was up to the public, but you never know because Greg Rucka, who authored the graphic novel, had this planned as a trilogy from the start. As a result, he was always aware of possible plot twists. And it’s exciting to think about where it could go, but you can never know until you see the first film. People wanting to see more is really flattering; it shows you did a good job, so we’ll see.
