Tyla exchanged water for sand at the 2024 Met Gala. She graced the steps in a full body-cast gown by Balmain, inspired by the theme “The Garden of Time” featuring a sand-based design, as a tribute to the sands of time.

Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director, was inspired by the concept of ephemerality in Tyla’s dress. He tells Vogue, he aimed to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece. Rousteing was thrilled with the end result, as he was inspired by the idea of sculpting a garment from sand.
