At today’s state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Charlotte paid a touching tribute to her late great-grandmother.

Along with her parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and her older brother, Prince George, the seven-year-old attended the final service dedicated to the deceased monarch.

Princess Charlotte arrived at the Westminster Abbey wedding with her mother and brother in tow. She was subsequently seen inside the building with her aunt Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, for a portrait.

Undoubtedly, the work was a visual tribute to her late grandmother. The Queen, who is well known for her love of horses and racing, was frequently sighted riding on the grounds of Windsor Castle far into her nineties. Camilla, the Queen Consort, reportedly told ITV that she believed riding was her “I think this is her passion in life, and she loves it and you can tell how much she loves it.”

For the event, Charlotte donned a black coat dress with opaque tights, black ballet flats, and a wide-brim hat similar to her mother’s. She also had a unique element to her outfit in the queen’s honour. A little silver horseshoe brooch, possibly a reference to her grandmother’s well-known love of horses, was pinned to the front of her coat dress.

In addition to her daughter, the Princess of Wales also wore jewellery to honour the monarch. She was sporting a four-strand pearl necklace with a diamond clasp that belonged to Queen Elizabeth. The Queen and Prince Philip celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 2017, and the Princess opted to wear the emotional item to both occasions. Prince Philip died in April 2021.

The Queen gave the Duchess of Sussex a set of beautiful pearl earrings as a gift for the solemn occasion.

Pearls have always been connected to mourning and royal women. Aristocrats have worn them for generations after Queen Victoria did so in 1861 to commemorate the death of her husband, Prince Albert.
