In every corner of world, fashion weeks are a fashion industry event, that last approximately one week, where fashion designers, brands or “houses” display their latest collections in runway fashion shows to buyers and the media. The Glitz African Fashion Week is one of many fashion weeks held in the African continent to shine a light on African designers.

Described as Ghana’s biggest annual fashion event, the event brought together esteemed industry players, fashion designers, entrepreneurs, influencers, students and enthusiasts to engage in an interactive weekend held from 6th to 8th November, 2020 at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre and Octagon rooftop. The Glitz Africa Fashion Week not only promised to provide a holistic experience in fashion education but also fashion exposure and entertainment.

Like every other Fashion Week held globally, some designers own the runway with top notch designs while others well, definitely need to go back to the drawing board. Here’s our top designs from the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2020 you can’t ignore.

Christie Brown is a Ghanaian luxury fashion brand offering a stylish taste of true neo-African culture. For the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2020 the brand catwalked fashion pieces off their Fall/Winter 2020 collection. Like every other Christie Brown, this was a hit – not only did the collection represent the African woman, the collection paved way for how African way can dress. You can’t ignore the soothing approach Ghanaian designer Aisha Ayensu takes to blend traditional West African prints and textiles with Western culture to create timeless as it is modern fashion attires.

Selina Beb has participated on globally recognised platforms such as Africa Fashion Week, London, 2015; GUBA expo 2014 and 2016 in the UK; New Orleans Fashion Week, 2018; Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2019.

For the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2020 the brand made a strong statement against societal issues. The collection showcased cowries with embedded with gold pendants, lots and lots of leather bags – I wouldn’t mind getting hold of. Highlight of the catwalk were the dashiki kimonos.

3. Zyellegant

If African royalty had a better representation on the runway – it would be Zyellegant Atelier. The fashion brand EST.2020 focuses on timeless pieces – bridal & couture gowns, luxury couture millinery, Statement accessories.

All fashion pieces that swayed down the runway gave an unconventional twist to how African brides should look. It was hard to miss the Iconic Saturn headpiece that gave models poise. For us at Leurr – it was the way each fabric accentuated the body of each model (you can only imagine how pleasing it would be on a bride-to-be) that made this collection a hit.

Cut to finest simplicity, the collection took an inspo from the traditional adire. Indigo was definitely the color of the line up. Gold accessories and mini handbags were paired to each attire for a finishing look.

6. Torlowei

Torlowei strutted a lineup off their Holiday Collection 20/21 for the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2020. For one when it comes to the melanin skin color I’m all for colors that make the skin shine! Torlowei definitely hit the nail on head with incredible designs. With colors ranging from yellow to green, the collection featured jumpsuits, kimonos, biker shorts, cardigan made with delicate care with silk. The embroidery designs as a finishing touch were definitely an icing on the cake.
