On Sept. 23 Dolce & Gabbana put on a grand, out-of-this-world show in a Sicilian piazza to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Alta Moda. To mark this event Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce unveiled a new spring/summer 2023 collection, a collaboration with Kim Kardashian.
Models wore a series of mostly black, white, and silver outfits with signature lace, crystal, and leopard print embellishments for the SS23 collection, which was created in collaborative effort with Kim Kardashian. The body-con silhouettes, tightly corseted waists, distressed denim, stretch jersey materials, and chokers with the initials “KIM” adorning models’ necks were all significantly inspired by Kim Kardashian’s fashion (similar to what she wore for Kravis wedding – Kourtney Kardashian’s springtime wedding launched this campaign. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were intrigued by Kim’s use of her own old Dolce clothing at the event, which sparked a conversation on the significance of archives in the fashion industry).
This fashion season has been characterized by a sense of loss following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, as shown by the prevalence of veils and the color scheme, which is primarily black.
In the background, a black and white blown-up video of Kim Kardashian eating spaghetti was playing. The opening of the event was accompanied by dramatic noises of paparazzi camera clicks, cries of “We love you Kim!” and light flashes, with Kris Jenner, Khloé Kardashian, and North West offering family support from the front row.
Kim Kardashian herself did not walk the catwalk, but she joined designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in a post-show appearance from behind a screen wearing a sparkling black gown. Together, the three made a bow, turning the star from a mere celebrity attraction to an actual fashion designer. She had her platinum blond hair up in an updo and wore a sleeveless gown encrusted in black Swarovski crystals in various dimensions to create a three dimensional effect.
A few days prior to the event, Dolce & Gabbana teased a collaboration with Kim Kardashian by debuting their most recent ad campaign, “Ciao Kim,” which shows the diva in full Italian glamour mode with peroxide blonde hair and a black lace dress while surrounded by adoring media. The black and white pictures are the second time this year that Kardashian has channeled Marilyn Monroe, following her Met Gala performance in the late Hollywood starlet’s iconic “naked” gown.
