Kim Kardashian announced on Instagram that she wore two Marilyn Monroe outfits to the Met Gala. Monroe’s green Norman Norell dress, which she wore to the Golden Globes in 1962, was Kardashian’s second look of the evening. Kim’s debut dress was a glittering, crystal-studded flesh tone gown Monroe wore to John F. Kennedy’s birthday party in 1962. Of course, because the style is so historic, she merely wore it for photos on the red carpet before hastily changing into a duplicate.
Kardashian stated ahead of the event (in a VOGUE interview) that she had a duplicate of another of Monroe’s gowns on hand, though she only planned to wear it to “eat pizza in my hotel room.” Kardashian wore a Heritage Auctions-owned green sequin gown for a quick photo shoot in her apartment. Norman Norell created Monroe’s dress, which she wore to the 1962 Golden Globes when she received the Henrietta Award for being a “world film favourite.”
She captioned the post “To top off my night after The Met, I had the honor of changing into Marilyn Monroe’s Norman Norell dress that she wore to the Golden Globes in 1962 —where she received the Henrietta Award For World Film Favorite. In my quest to find the Jean Louis hand beaded dress that I wore to the gala, I discovered @heritageauctions owned Marilyn’s iconic green sequined gown. Further into my research I found out that the owner of the Golden Globe that she received that evening was none other than my friend @jeffleatham. I saw this all as a sign the way that all of the stars aligned. It will forever be one of the greatest privileges of my life to be able to channel my inner Marilyn in this way, on such a special night. On Monday, Kardashian was chastised for donning Monroe’s legendary “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” gown on the Met Gala red carpet. The reality personality claimed that she went on a crash diet to lose 16 pounds in three weeks in order to get into the dress, which is an incredibly unhealthy procedure. Others have criticized Kardashian for wearing a historically significant dress, claiming that she is jeopardizing its preservation.
