Britney Spears’ red-carpet denim gown continues to be an inspiration for modern fashion icons more than 20 years after she debuted the iconic style.
Dua Lipa is the most recent star to draw style cues from Britney Spears, who famously defined a decade of fashion in 2001 by attending the American Music Awards wearing a patchwork denim gown and matching all-denim suit with her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.
Lipa wore a corset dress from Blumarine’s spring 2023 collection while posting pictures of her new look on Instagram on the 16th. In addition to a train and a grommet belt with an elaborate letter B, the item had studs along the front and along the breast. She combined the outfit with additional pieces of jewelry that appeared to be from the early 2000s, such as her choker with a cross pendant studded with crystals.
Lipa chose the lighter of two variations of this garment that were shown on the runway by creative director Nicola Brognano, a master of Y2K fashion allusions.
However, Lipa wore the outfit alone and drew all the focus to herself, unlike Spears, who debuted her denim dress at the AMAs with Justin Timberlake flanking her.
The singer released the photos in the gown in celebration of her 93rd gig on the Future Nostalgia tour. Lipa has spent the most of the past year touring the globe while performing in custom Balenciaga and Mugler catsuits. In her spare time, Lipa models looks right off the catwalk. She performs her penultimate concert on Wednesday before making one more trip in Albania to commemorate the nation’s Independence Day. But Lipa won’t stop providing beauty services simply because she’s done traveling for work.
