The 2023 Met Gala’s dress code, which will honor the late Karl Lagerfeld, has been announced by Vogue.
On May 1, 2023, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will once again host the grandest night in fashion in honor of the impending Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty exhibition at the Costume Institute. The curator of the Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty show, Andrew Bolton, and the exhibition’s creative consultant, longstanding Lagerfeld colleague Amanda Harlech, face the challenging task of distilling the designer’s body of work into about 150 pieces. Happily, though, the 2023 dress code at the Met Gala is “In honor of Karl,” so paying respect to Mr. Lagerfeld is not only the curators’ responsibility this year.
However, participants are required to interpret and adhere to the subject in three different ways, according to Vogue, which organizes the annual fundraiser every year at the direction of editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
“The first, most authentic approach would be to wear an archival look from one of the labels Lagerfeld led,” Vogue states.
According to Vogue, a fantastic option for attendees who select this strategy would be a “archival Balmain frock dating between 1955 and 1968,” when Lagerfeld worked as Pierre Balmain’s assistant.
Attendees may also draw inspiration from classic designs Lagerfeld produced while serving as the chief designer of Patou in the late 1950s, or during his tenures as the creative director of Parisian fashion house Chloé from 1963 to 1983 and again from 1992 to 1997.
As noted by Vogue, guests on the Met Gala’s famous guest list may select an outfit from Lagerfeld’s era as the designer label’s creative director. Vintage Fendi is also a possibility. The source claims that “Most any vintage Fendi red carpet ensemble would feel right at home at this year’s Met Gala.”
The second approach, according to Vogue, is for attendees to choose a “modern-day” outfit from Chanel or Fendi, “two houses on which Lagerfeld left an indelible impression.”
“Which route will secure a glamorous attendee a spot on our best-dressed list? A look with originality! Lagerfeld, we guess, would have hated a half-hearted homage, and with such an immense oeuvre, guests shouldn’t have any trouble unearthing a one-of-a-kind piece,” Vogue writes, adding: “No matter which way guests go, the assignment is clear: Let’s do him proud!”
