The 14th Headies Awards held in Nigeria on Sunday night was notable not only because it was the first time the awards show took place virtually, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event held at La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, Ibeju-Lekki was also a landmark event for new performers as they accumulated a record number of wins in the performance categories.
Before now many awardees, nominees, and presenters had used their celebrity status to direct attention to the END SARS movement, which has become a rallying cry among Nigerians across the country as a result of oppression and police brutality.
The highlight from the award night was when Nigerian comedian Bovi wore a native attire with the Nigerian flag stained with blood signifying the 2020 Lekki shooting.
While those responsible have not been brought to book yet, calls from International bodies and fellow Nigerians are ongoing for accountability and justice.
