The problems that caused Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan to leave their professions as working senior royals are still being discussed by the prince openly.

A 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper will serve as the start of the Prince of Sussex’s publicity tour for his upcoming biography Spare. In a clip made available by the show in advance of the January 8 special, Harry responds to criticism of his choice to talk openly about the discord within the royal family that caused him and Meghan to resign.

The prince adds that he originally sought to manage the problem quietly when asked why he ultimately made the decision to publicly distance himself from the royal family.

“Every single time I’ve tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife,” he told Cooper. “You know, the family motto is never complain, never explain, but it’s just a motto.”

“There’s a lot of complaining and a lot of explaining…being done through leaks,” Cooper clarified, with the royal repeating, “through leaks.”

“They will feed or have a conversation with the correspondent,” Harry continued. “And that correspondent will literally be spoon-fed information and write the story. And at the bottom of it they will say that they’ve reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. But the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting. So when we’re being told for the last six years, ‘We can’t put a statement out to protect you.’ But you do it for other members of the family. It becomes — there becomes a point when silence is betrayal.”

The new film comes after the debut of the Harry & Meghan Netflix docuseries, in which the pair discusses how their wretched lives were made worse by the way they were treated by the British media. The two admit in the series that they didn’t feel like they had any backing from the institution and that they were frequently utilized as a diversion from other controversies involving other members of the royal family.

The whole interview with Prince Harry will appear on Sunday, January 8, 2023 on 60 Minutes, two days before the publication of his memoir on Monday, January 10.
