Upon their marriage, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan clearly became the subject of negative coverage for the royal family, but they weren’t the only ones to lose out to the “dirty game” played by the rival royal press offices.

The Duke of Sussex says in his brand-new book, Spare, that at one time, King Charles III’s press office planted false articles about Princess Catherine and her children with Will in an effort to gain favorable coverage for the Duke and Camilla. In an extract acquired by Us Weekly, Harry claims that William began their chat by being quite “upset” and “talking too quickly.”

“Seething,” William reportedly told Harry, “They’ve done this to me for the last time,” speaking of their father’s communications department taking aim at them. He added that he “wasn’t going to take it anymore.”

Harry consented to face Charles with William after pointing out that the same was done to him and his wife, Meghan. “Pa instantly got upset. He began shouting that Willy was paranoid. We both were,” Harry writes. “Just because we were getting bad press, and he was getting good, that didn’t mean his staff was behind it.”

Harry claims that despite having “evidence” from reporters that Charles’s team was responsible for the unfavorable press, he and William’s father still disregarded them.

Harry says that even if the talk with the king didn’t yield many results, the fact that they had once more behaved as a unit gave him and William a brief sense of victory. Harry claims that the Prince of Wales did not share his sentiments.

Harry claims in his Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, that he and his brother made a pledge to one another that they would never behave like their father and disparage one another in the press. However, William did not stick to their word. “I would far rather get destroyed in the press than play along with this game or this business of trading. And to see my brother’s office copy the very same thing that we promised the two of us would never, ever do,” Harry says in the doc, “that was heartbreaking.”
