Gabrielle Union recently discussed her first marriage to Chris Howard on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard. Union informed Dax Shepard, the show’s host, that their five-year marriage had been “dysfunctional from day one.”
Union said that she wasn’t “getting wife of the year awards” for her marriage to the former NFL quarterback, whom she divorced in 2006, after Shepard showed regret for his own prior affairs. Shepard, who is now wed to actress Kristen Bell, revealed that he had an open relationship for nine years before to that and that while he regrets some of the things he did at the time, he doesn’t regret everything.
“In my first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating,” she explained. “A part of it was like keeping up with his activities, like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing? You’re going to feel this one.’ And I just felt entitled to it as well.” She went on to say that she was “paying all the bills. I was working my ass off and I felt like that’s what comes, the spoils of riches.” She went on to tell Shepard that she wishes she felt guilt for her past behavior but that “it was such a stupid relationship that should have never got out of the dating phase.”
Former NBA player Dwayne Wade and Union are now a happy married couple. They were married in 2014 and are now parents to Kaavia James (whom they welcomed via surrogate in 2018). In addition, Wade and ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches have son Xavier and daughter Zaya, as well as son Zaire and daughter Zaya.
