When Fast Times at Ridgemont High hit theaters on Aug. 13, 1982, it was more than just “a cool buzz” — it was a cultural reset. Based on Cameron Crowe’s eponymous book and directed by Amy Heckerling, the teen comedy became an instant hit, earning more than $27 million globally at the box office, per Box Office Mojo.
The film follows a group of Southern California high school students navigating adolescence, including stoned surfer Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn), curious underclassman Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and her popular older brother Brad (Judge Reinhold). The movie not only launched careers but helped redefine the coming-of-age genre entirely.
In September 2020, the film was back in the spotlight when Dane Cook hosted a star-studded virtual table read featuring exes Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Since then, Penn and several of his former costars have gone on to win Academy Awards.
Here’s what the cast of Fast Times at Ridgemont High has been up to since making “tasty waves.”
Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli
Penn played Ridgemont High’s resident stoner, Jeff Spicoli — a role that gradually opened many doors for the young actor. He went on to star in 1995’s Dead Man Walking, earning his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His later performances in Mystic River (2003), Milk (2008) and One Battle After Another (2025) secured him three more Oscar wins, including Best Supporting Actor for the latter.
Other leading roles include Carlito’s Way (1993), Sweet and Lowdown (1999), I Am Sam (2001), 21 Grams (2003), Gangster Squad (2013) and Daddio (2023). On the small screen, Penn starred in Hulu’s The First (2018), STARZ’s Gaslit (2022) and Stan’s CAUGHT* (2023).
Penn is currently dating model Valeria Nicov. He shares two children with actress Robin Wright, to whom he was married from 1996 to 2010, and was previously married to Madonna from 1985 to 1989.
Jennifer Jason Leigh as Stacy Hamilton
Leigh portrayed the innocent, sweet and curious Stacy Hamilton. After Fast Times, she starred in Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989), Single White Female (1992) and Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994), with the latter earning her first of two Golden Globe nominations.
Later career highlights include The Hateful Eight (2015), which earned her an Oscar nod, LBJ (2016) and Good Time (2017). Her television work includes Weeds, Revenge, Twin Peaks: The Return, Atypical, Hunters and Fargo, as well as recurring roles on Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and High Potential throughout 2026.
The actress was married to filmmaker Noah Baumbach from 2005 to 2013. They share one child, son Rohmer, born in 2010.
Judge Reinhold as Brad Hamilton
Reinhold played Brad Hamilton, Ridgemont High’s king of the jocks and Stacy’s older brother. He went on to appear in 1984’s Gremlins and played Detective Billy Rosewood in Beverly Hills Cop that same year — a role he reprised in the franchise’s three sequels.
In 1994, Reinhold earned an Emmy nomination for his role as Aaron on Seinfeld and began his years-long run as Neil in The Santa Clause film franchise.
Reinhold has been married to Amy Reinhold since January 2000, with the couple celebrating their 22nd wedding anniversary on Instagram in 2022. They share one child, daughter Haley, born in 2013.
Robert Romanus as Mike Damone
Robert Romanus portrayed Mike Damone, a gambler and notorious ladies’ man. Following the teen comedy, he landed a recurring role on Days of Our Lives before appearing on series such as Fame and 21 Jump Street. He’s since starred in several horror flicks in 2023, including The Searching and In the Shadows.
Romanus told the Trainwreck’d Society in May 2013 that he performed in a band called Poppa’s Kitchen. He also previously owned Bob’s Espresso, a now-shuttered coffee shop in North Hollywood, Calif.
The actor has three children — sons Elias and Dayton and daughter Annabel — he shared on the Da Bois Podcast in December 2025.
Phoebe Cates as Linda Barrett
Phoebe Cates played the experienced underclassman Linda Barrett. Like Reinhold, she was also cast in Gremlins, reprising her role as Kate in the 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
Cates took a hiatus from acting after 1994’s Princess Caraboo to raise her two children with husband Kevin Kline, whom she wed in March 1989. The couple shares son Owen and daughter Greta.
Cates briefly returned to acting with 2001’s The Anniversary Party, which Leigh co-wrote and co-directed. (Husband Kline also starred in the dramedy.) She also has a voice acting credit in the 2015 video game Lego Dimensions.
Brian Backer as Mark “Rat” Ratner
Not long after winning a Tony Award in 1981 for the Woody Allen play The Floating Light Bulb, Brian Backer portrayed one of Stacy’s love interests, the shy Mark “Rat” Ratner.
After Fast Times, the Brooklyn native appeared in films such as Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (1987) and Loser (2000). He also made guest appearances on Charles in Charge, Growing Pains and Santa Barbara. His last film credit was 2012’s Vamps.
Forest Whitaker as Charles Jefferson
Whitaker portrayed Ridgemont High’s football star, Charles Jefferson. His career has skyrocketed since landing the role in the 1982 teen comedy. Whitaker won an Oscar, Golden Globe, and Actor Award (formerly known as the SAG Awards) for portraying real-life dictator Idi Amin in 2006’s The Last King of Scotland, as well as a second Actor Award for 2018’s Black Panther. He also earned an Emmy in 2003 for co-executive producing the TV movie Door to Door.
Additional film credits include The Great Debaters (2007), Lee Daniels’ The Butler (2013), Arrival (2016), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and Respect (2021). Whitaker has since starred on the series Emperor of Ocean Park, Andor and Godfather of Harlem.
Whitaker has four children. He welcomed two daughters, Sonnet and True, with his late ex-wife Keisha Nash. Nash had one child, daughter Autumn, from a previous relationship, whom Whitaker raised as his own. He also has an older son, Ocean, from a previous relationship.
Ray Walston as Mr. Hand
Ray Walston played Mr. Hand, Ridgemont High’s no-nonsense history teacher. The actor returned to his role as Mr. Hand on the Fast Times TV series and later won two Emmys for his work on Picket Fences. Walston’s final on-screen performances came in the early 2000s with guest spots on Touched by an Angel and 7th Heaven.
Walston died on Jan. 1, 2001, at age 86, per Variety. He was married to Ruth Calvert for nearly 60 years, and they shared one daughter together.
Nicolas Cage as Brad’s Bud
Fast Times at Ridgemont High marked Cage’s first movie role, in which he played an unnamed friend of Brad Hamilton. The actor’s career reached new heights in 1995 when he landed the lead in Leaving Las Vegas, a performance that earned him an Academy Award.
Over the next few years, Cage appeared in one blockbuster hit after another, including The Rock (1996), Face/Off (1997), Con Air (1997), City of Angels (1998), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) and Adaptation. (2002). He also starred in the 2024 thriller Longlegs, the 2025 western Gunslingers and the 2025 horror flick The Carpenter’s Son.
