After nearly three decades at the creative helm of Versace, Donatella Versace is stepping down, marking the end of an era for the legendary fashion house. The 69-year-old, who has shaped the brand’s bold aesthetic since the tragic passing of her brother Gianni in 1997, will transition into a new role as chief brand ambassador. Stepping into the creative spotlight is Dario Vitale, who takes over as chief creative officer, signaling a fresh chapter for the Italian luxury powerhouse.

is debut collection will be the first in 47 years not overseen by Gianni or Donatella Versace. However, the brand’s connection to its founding family remains intact, as Donatella transitions into the role of chief brand ambassador, continuing to represent the legacy she helped build.

Donatella Versace expressed her enthusiasm for the brand’s next chapter following the announcement of Dario Vitale as Versace’s new creative director. Emphasizing her commitment to supporting emerging designers, she stated, “Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us and excited to see Versace through new eyes.” Reflecting on her tenure, she thanked her design team and colleagues, calling it “the greatest honor” to continue her late brother Gianni’s legacy. “He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity,” she added. As she transitions into her new role as chief brand ambassador, Versace reaffirmed her lifelong dedication to the house, stating, “Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”

Expressing his gratitude, Vitale acknowledged Versace’s rich heritage and praised Donatella Versace for her trust and dedication to the brand. He emphasized his commitment to shaping Versace’s future with his vision and expertise. At 41, Vitale is regarded as one of Milan’s most innovative designers, having built an impressive career that includes roles at Dsquared2, Bottega Veneta under Tomas Maier, and most recently, as design director of ready-to-wear at Miu Miu before his departure in January.

Dario Vitale’s appointment comes amid speculation that Capri Holdings may be looking to sell Versace. The luxury house was acquired by Capri in 2018 for €1.83 billion, following the Versace family’s decision to sell its controlling stake alongside Blackstone’s 20 percent share. Donatella Versace remained as chief creative officer under the deal, overseeing collections and representing the brand. However, Capri Holdings—also the owner of Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo—has faced mounting pressure since the collapse of its $8.5 billion merger with Tapestry, which was blocked by the Federal Trade Commission. Reports suggest both Versace and Jimmy Choo are now up for sale, with Prada Group among the potential buyers.

Versace’s transition marks the end of a family-led era that began with Gianni Versace’s founding of the brand in 1978. Donatella Versace, who played a key creative role from the start, took over after Gianni’s tragic murder in 1997, guiding the house through challenges and cementing its global influence. Her leadership led to both creative milestones and financial struggles, culminating in the brand’s sale in 2018. Now, with Dario Vitale stepping in as creative director, Versace enters a new phase—its first without direct family oversight.

Under Donatella Versace’s leadership, the brand regained its cultural relevance in the 2010s, with her emerging as both a fashion icon and a champion of change, from advocating LGBT rights to banning fur. The family sold a stake in the company in 2014, and by 2017, speculation of a full sale began. Donatella, while deeply tied to the brand, acknowledged the need for change, which she embodied in bold, empowering collections—most notably her 2018 tribute to Gianni. Known for her wit, loyalty, and star-studded friendships, she remains a defining figure in fashion. With Dario Vitale now taking the creative helm, his success at Miu Miu signals a promising new chapter, though his appointment also marks the end of an era led by one of fashion’s true icons.
