Britney Spears is an icon! And although the pop icon has not released a new album since “Glory” in 2016, her influence was evident at the 40th annual MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night. Her impact was felt throughout the event, from the red carpet to the stage performances, serving as a reminder of her enduring legacy in the music industry.

Tate McRae

Tate McRae boldly showed her love for Britney Spears, emulating her iconic style at the 2024 MTV VMAs. In a black lace minidress by Roberto Cavalli, McRae channeled Spears’s 2001 look, complete with Fleur du Mal lingerie underneath. Her effortless waves and Maison Ernest heels added a modern twist to the tribute.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion ensured that everyone noticed the significant Britney reference of the evening by donning a forest green bikini top, bedazzled booty shorts with tassels, and a stylish python wrap – a tribute to Britney’s memorable 2001 VMA performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U.”

Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina’s performance at the VMAs was full of hidden references, including nods to Madonna and Britney Spears. She wore a stunning Bob Mackie gown that Madonna had worn in 1991 and paid homage to Britney’s iconic legacy on stage with a swing and astronaut backdrop, along with the famous “Oops!..I did it again” dialogue.
