Ayra Starr has been championing the Y2K scene in Nigeria for a long time, from tiny minis to cutouts. So, it comes as no surprise, then, that the international afrobeats musician opted for a vintage look for 2023—specifically, a rare Thierry Mugler dress.
Ayra walked the pink carpet wearing a rare circa 1989–90 Thierry Mugler petal dress featuring a fitted corset bodice with upturned petals on the skirt and adjustable straps. She accessorized it with a two-toned sequin pump and choker, with her hair styled in a half-up, half-down hairdo with fringe that had a retro feel to it.
It was truly a victorious night for Nigeria, as Rema went on to bag the Best in Afrobeats award for the song Calm Down featuring Selena Gomez. Rema’s ‘Calm Down’, released on August 25, 2022, was nominated alongside Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido feat Musa Key’s ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr’s ‘2 Sugar,’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Bandana.’
