The head-ties in Nigeria are known as gele and can be large and elaborate. They are made of a firmer material and cover a woman’s entire hair and ears, with the only exposed part being her face and earrings. In Ghana, opportunity to wear a duku usually falls on a religious day of Friday, Saturday or Sunday, depending on whether the wearers are Muslim, Seventh-Day Adventists or Sunday church-going Christians. It’s clear that head gele’s are key to the cultural attiretheme, and here are some of our favourite ones.

The Northern Belle

Actress Ini Dima-Okojie arrived in a nothern themed head wrap by eminence_mez. Her outfit, however, was a matching 2 piece ensemble with bead embellishments and jewellery.

Flaming Flamingo

Like always Venital Akpofure made a statement in a pink avant gele paired with a head-to-toe pink gown that featured a flowing chiffon train and a draped waistline detail.

Arabian Nights

Liquorose took our breaths away in this piece by Jenrewa. Her headpiece featured a distinct rolled up detail. She accessorised with African corals.

Blue Galore

Tsatsii Wendy Madiba completed her traditional bridal wear with a towering matching gele.

 Rich Heritage

Medlin Boss is another celebrity who matched her entire outfit from head to toe. Her gown and headscarf all had the same pink hue design. The bejeweled scarf was tied in a towering height with her neckline decorated with stacks of beaded necklace for a chic look.

Tie Dye

Beauty Tukura’s green headwrap alludes to the Tignon Laws and is a tribute to the various styles of headwraps worn by Black women across the world. It calls to mind Cynthia Erivo’d towering headpiece to the 2022 MET Gala.
