The music industry is buzzing over the 2024 Grammy Awards nominees, which feature African musicians displaying the vast musical landscape of the region. The event is slated for February 4, 2024, in Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, and is expected to be a joyous celebration of outstanding music.
The Recording Academy had recently added the new category together with two others: Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording. The nominees for Best African Music Performance include ASAKE & Olamide’s “Amapiano”, Burna Boy’s “City Boys”, Davido’s “UNAVAILABLE”, Ayra Starr’s “Rush”, and Tyla’s “Water”.
In total, Burna Boy leads in nominations, with four mentions in the Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Performance, Best Global Album, and Best Melodic Rap Performance categories. He also becomes the first African artist to earn five consecutive Grammy nominations from 2019 to 2023.
Singer Davido also got nominated for three Grammy Awards, being his first addition to the list in more than a decade. He was nominated for the Best African Performance category for his hit single ‘Unavailable’ featuring Musa Keys. The list also included a number of first too with singer Ayra Starr, Tyla, Asake and Olamide recieving their first nominations.
