What to Know About The 9th AMVCA

Each year the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) recognises outstanding achievements in television and film. First held in 2013 in Lagos, Nigeria entries into the award ceremony include films and TV series aired the previous year. The ninth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is set to begin on Thursday, May 18, 2023 with an ‘Opening Night and Cultural Day’ event to kick off the series of activities preceding the award night on Saturday, May 20.

Who is hosting?

Nancy Isime and Daniel Etim-Effiong are set to host the cultural day event. But there’s more – the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) also named IK Osakioduwa, a Nigerian media celebrity, as co-host of the 2023 edition. Osakioduwa will present the film, television, and content awards for the ninth time, with South African model and Miss Universe 2019, Zozibini Tunzi. On the red carpet, media personalities Toke Makinwa, Uti Nwachukwu, Sika Osei, and VJ Adams will also be present. The awards’ organizers have also announced a second edition of the Digital Content Creators’ Day, which will include some of the top figures in the creative and entertainment industries conducting discussions about making the best of digital content production.

The event will look at the power of content creation, how creators may maximize and monetize their creativity, and how to stay relevant and long-lasting in the business.

It Is A 3-Day Event

The event will take place over three days, beginning with the Opening Night and Cultural Day, followed by the Digital Content Creators, Young Filmmakers Day, and the Runway Show/Nominee Gala the following day. The festivities will conclude with the Award Night.

Who Are The Nominee’s

The AMVCA 2023 nominees include Kunle Afolayan’s Netflix original movie Anikulapo, Loukman Ali’s Brotherhood, Dimeji Ajibola’s Shanty Town, and Funke Akindele’s Battle on Buka Street. Anikulapo, which was recently voted as the most-watched movie on Netflix in Nigeria in 2022, bagged the most nominations of the night with 16 nominations. It featured in the categories of Best Actress in a Drama, movie or TV series, two nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category, Best Supporting Actress (Sola Sobowale), Costume design (Toyin Ogundeji), and best writer. It also earned nominations in the categories of best light designer, best indigenous language movie, best overall movie-Africa, best cinematographer, best director, best makeup, best sound track, best sound editor, best lighting, and best picture editor. The 2023 edition of the AMVCA was nominated for 11 categories, including Best Actor in a drama, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Designer, Best Art Director, Best Lighting Designer, and Best Director.

The crime thriller Shanty Town, directed by Dimeji Ajibola and produced by Chinenye Nworah, grabbed 11 nominations, making it the third best-nominated film for this edition. Other Top Nominated Films include Battle on Buka Street, King of Thieves (Agesinkole), Four Four Forty Four, Man of God, and Ijakumo the Born Again Stripper.

The event will be broadcast live on all Africa Magic channels.
