With a truck load of determination, Nigerian Chef, Hilda Baci embarked on a journey to break the world record for the longest cooking time by an individual. A title previously held by Lata Tondon from India, who cooked for 87 hours and 45 minutes in 2019.

Baci was finally given the title with a cooking time of 93 hours and 11 minutes after thorough assessment. Though she attempted to break the 100-hour mark, but nearly seven hours were subtracted due to taking extra minutes during one of her rest breaks. Sharing the news on their official twitter handle, GWR explained that a five-minute rest break is permitted for every hour of activity, which can be accumulated if not taken. During the effort, Hilda could only use the restroom or sleep during these breaks.
Hilda had to follow a few rules during her record-breaking cook-a-thon: at least two foods had to be prepared or cooked at once, and while a sous-chef was allowed to help with prep work, clean up, and tidy up the kitchen, the cook had to do all the actual cooking.
According to Hilda her aim was to “put Nigerian cuisine on the map” and “to inspire young African women to chase their dreams.”
Millions of people in Nigeria and beyond followed Hilda’s record-breaking cook-a-thon via an Instagram live broadcast, which captivated the social media globe. The Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and award-winning musician Tiwa Savage were among the prominent Nigerians who came to Hilda to encourage her during her quest to break the record.
