That Lizzo looks so stunning tonight is just fitting. The “About Damn Time” singer seized her earned star power on the MTV VMAs red carpet in a voluminous blue-black Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown after a painful and sad run of headlines in which she was either ridiculed for her weight or confused for another Black plus-size celebrity. In addition to being nominated for Artist of the Year, Song of the Summer, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Video at the 2022 VMAs, the singer is also nominated in several other categories.

The stunning dress, from Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 2022 couture collection, had an off-the-shoulder neckline and engulfed her in cascades of shimmering silk. Her green-tinted lips were adorned with a cuff, and she accessorized with matching translucent opera gloves and gold jewelry, which featured several hoop earrings.

Lizzo is nominated for five prizes tonight: Song of the Year, Best Pop, Video for Good, and Artist of the Year. Along with Bad Bunny, Jack Harlow, Blackpink, and Nicki Minaj, she is one of the performers tonight.

Lizzo previously talked about the meaning behind her nominated single, “About Damn Time,” in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1.

“‘About Damn Time’ can lead into so many conversations,” she said, per Entertainment Tonight. “It’s about damn time I feel better, it’s about damn time we get out of this pandemic. It’s about damn time we get the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. There’s so many things. It’s about damn time we popped the champagne. It’s about damn time the tequila got here.”

The radiant appearance comes soon after comedian Aries Spears made horrible remarks about Lizzo’s body during a “Art of Dialogue” interview that was posted on YouTube. “I can’t get past the fact that she looks like the shit emoji,” he said, after the interviewer praised her music. He later added, alluding to himself, “When you funny and you got swagger and confidence and you decent-looking—I think I’m at least handsome—you get pussy. But a woman that’s built like a plate of mashed potatoes is in trouble.”

He then criticized the entire body-positive movement, adding, “Y’all claim womanhood and about sisterhood and support for your sister, you know, when it comes to that ridiculous shit. But if you really gave a fuck, why wouldn’t you go, ‘Black girl, we love your confidence, boo boo, but this ain’t it. This ain’t it,’” he said. “Y’all jump on me for making jokes, but y’all won’t be fucking real and go, ‘Sister, put the eclair down. This ain’t it. It’s treadmill time.
