In recognition of her work in the creative sectors, Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington has received an honorary degree from the University of Wolverhampton.
The University of Wolverhampton released a statement on Monday with the news. The actress, who earned a degree in drama and performance in 2009, received a doctorate in the arts in honor of her outstanding contribution to the arts and culture, claims the statement.
She stated “My experience at Wolverhampton was literally life-changing. it is the foundation upon which my career has been built.
“When I enrolled on my course in 2006 I was not confident at all. There is silent confidence that comes as a result of being informed and knowledgeable. I was taught to believe in my natural abilities but also put those abilities to good use. I was taught that talent is great but you need to be hard working to achieve it.
“This award is very humbling for me and I hope that it inspires prospective and current students to pursue careers in the creative industries.”
She joins the group of Nollywood stars Bob-Manuel Udokwu and Ireti Doyle, comedian Helen Paul, musician Tiwa Savage, and others who have earned degrees from foreign universities.
The University of Wolverhampton grants honorary degrees to individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to their field of study. The Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton is scheduled to host the University’s commencement exercises between Monday, September 5, and Saturday, September 10, 2022.
The Arbitration, The Wedding Party, and Falling are among the movies that Etomi has worked on. She won the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Drama for her work in Falling. She has also acted in famous movies including Couple of Days, Out of Luck, and A Soldier’s Story (2015). In the fourth and fifth seasons of Shuga, a television soap opera promoting HIV/AIDS prevention, Etomi played Shiela. In Yemisi Wada’s crime drama LasGidi Cops, which launched on television in June 2016, Etomi started playing the role of Amaka Obiora, an undercover police officer. She was one of the 14 worldwide superstars listed by Vogue. She released her debut song, “So Natural,” in February 2022.
